Ghana to host General Assembly of Social Watch

ACCRA, Oct. 20, — Ghana is to host the fourth General Assembly of Social Watch, an umbrella body for civil society organizations (CSOs) from 60 countries, to deliberate over global issues including a Social Watch 2009 Report released two weeks ago.
The three-day meeting scheduled for Oct.27-29 would be attended by representatives from Africa, the Arab Region, Asia, Europe, North America and Latin America, organizers say.
It will also elect executives to steer its affairs for the next three years. Ghana is the first African country to host the meeting after Rome (Italy), Beirut (Lebanon) and Sofia (Bulgaria). Read more…

Accra, Oct. 7, GNA - Social Watch, an international non-governmental organisation (NGO) on social development and gender discrimination has called on government to regulate activities of financial institutions in the country.
It said financial institutions, which were allowed to rely on their own internal mechanisms for risk management enabled them to transfer their irresponsible risk-taking to the most vulnerable in society.

Poverty and its exacerbation by way of the financial crisis is a problem for those living in the margins of misery or the “bottom billion” as well as a global challenge that permeates entire sectors of society, in both developed and developing countries, and needs immediate action and attention from all governments concluded experts at the launch of the annual Social Watch report on September 25, 2009 in New York during the high level segment of the United Nations General Assembly. The event organized by Social Watch, to launch its report entitled People First, drew the attention of United Nations Representatives, academics, local poverty and gender equity activists and the media. The Social Watch report 2009 was launched Friday, September 25, 2009 at the United Nations Plaza in New York. This year’s Social Watch report from over sixty civil society organizations around the world, entitled People First, shows that the only way out of the current ecological and economic crisis is to devote resources to strengthening people’s wellbeing. The launch was co-sponsored by NGLS, Amnesty International, Social Watch, Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung and the Global Policy Forum.
